Luis Buñuel’s “Illusion Travels by Streetcar” (1954) ‘La ilusión viaja en tranvía’
Luis Buñuel’s Mexican films are often overlooked in caparison to his two early Surrealist masterpieces Un Chien Andalou (1929) L'Age d'Or (1930) and his later Art House films. The Mexican melodramas and comedies contain many types of every day Surrealism. Dreams, unexpected juxtapositions, fetishism and dark psychological problems pop up regularly.
This is a personal favorite. Lots of odd details. A passion play. Sides of meat hung in the streetcar. All shot on the streets of Mexico City.
Buñuel’s other Mexican films of interest include: “Mexican Bus Ride” (1952), “El bruto” (1953), “El” (1953) “Wuthering Heights” (1954), “The Criminal Life of Archibaldo de la Cruz” (1955) and “Fever Mounts at El Pao” (1959)
